The 2028 Comprehensive Plan
Needs to be Stronger for Balanced Growth

The Update to the 2018 Comprehensive Plan is starting NOW and due by 2028.   This is our chance to make meaningful changes for the next 10 years!

Whats at stake?

  • This plan represents the only mechanism to establish goals, objectives and strategies for land use over the next 10 years.

  • The substance of the Comprehensive Plan is used to guide future land use ordinances and regulations.

  • The Future Land Use Map, a key part of the plan, provides a legal means to challenge undesirable land use decisions.

  • The passage of recent state legislation, SB23 and HB450 make it easier for developers to fast track and bypass public input requirements, but Counties can devise and apply their own regulations to implement this!

  • The plan requires public input!  NOW is our chance to hold the county decision makers accountable and make some real changes to protect our quality of life!

What needs to change?

  • The current plan contains vaguely worded goals and objectives, and open ended strategies.  WORDS MATTER and language needs to be definitive.

  • The current plan does not hold the County accountable for progress toward goals and objectives.  We need objective, proactive measures.

  • The current plan does not articulate the public input from 2018.  We need Sussex to include a summary of the public input, and evidence that the plan reflects this feedback.

What you can do?

  • Visit our Comprehensive Plan Update page regularly for updates on the process.

  • Review the Current Plan, if possible, and write to county council with your feedback and expectations for the new plan.

  • Attend SPC Meetings to hear the latest news and upcoming actions
